Meet Ellie

Her Story

She’s 4 years old and facing the fight of her young life with Restrictive Cardiomyopathy — a rare heart condition that can only be cured through a heart transplant.

Ellie and her family have been living between Seattle and Lewiston, as she awaits her new heart. SDLF would like to help make this journey a little lighter for her and her family.

The Spencer Durbin Legacy Foundation was created to carry forward the love, heart, and giving spirit of Spencer Durbin — a young man whose heart still beats on through the gift of organ donation. Helping Ellie and her family feels deeply connected to Spencer’s legacy and the heart of what our foundation stands for: turning love, loss, and legacy into purpose. 💙

A mutual friend recently connected Ellie’s mom with a wonderful nonprofit, HS4H (Housing for Hope), which is helping the family find housing solutions near Seattle Children’s Hospital. It’s one more example of how kindness connects — and how Spencer continues working his giving magic from heaven. 💫

You can help make a real difference for Ellie and her family as they walk this road of hope and healing. Every donation, every share, every prayer helps.

A Family's promise:

Turning Love, Loss, and Legacy into Purpose

The Spencer Durbin Legacy Foundation (SDLF) was created out of love — to keep alive the light, spirit, and heart of Spencer Durbin, a young man who made every moment count both on and off the field.

Spencer was a loyal friend, a fierce lacrosse defender, loving son, brother, nephew, grandson, and a natural leader who stood up for the underdog. He made everyone around him feel seen, valued, and included — whether he was coaching a youth player, battling on defense as #22, or just being the guy who could make anyone laugh – he made everyone feel special.

When Spencer’s life was tragically cut short at age 21 from an accidental overdose, he continued giving in the most selfless way possible — through organ donation. His heart still beats in another. His eyes allow others to see the world. His tissue and grafts helped heal over 50 people. That’s who Spencer was — and that’s who he’ll always be. The day Spencer became an organ donor was 10/22/2022. After his passing, his coach retired his number so that no one else would wear #22 as a Curtis Viking lacrosse player.

We are blessed to have a huge group of love and support of family and friends, helping us move our mission forward. They all loved Spencer and they love us - we are so excited to do this work with all of these special people around us.

The Spencer Durbin Legacy Foundation exists to carry that love and spirit forward and to help others through three pillars.

1. Supporting Youth Athletes

No kid should ever be left on the sidelines. Spencer believed in giving everyone a shot, no matter where they came from or what they had. Spencer continued to give back as a youth coach, something he was passionate about. SDLF provides scholarships, equipment, and mentorship to help youth and high school players chase their dreams. Our Spencer Squad community supports teamwork, inclusion, and the importance of lifting others up.

2. Organ Donation Support & Awareness

Spencer’s story reminds us that a single choice can change countless lives. When he got his driver’s license, at age 16, he chose to be an organ donor. SDLF partners with LifeCenterNW, Donate Life, Lions World Vision, and other organizations to share the message of hope, healing, and second chances. Through community events, storytelling, and outreach, we encourage others to say “yes” to organ donation — to give the ultimate gift, as Spencer did. Outlive Yourself!

3. Overdose Awareness & Prevention

Spencer’s passing also reminds us of the importance of protecting and educating our youth. SDLF works to raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and substance abuse, offering education, prevention training, and Naloxone distribution to families, schools, and sports teams. We are partnering with the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department to combat this issue. Together, we fight to save lives and end the stigma around asking for help.

As we start out on this mission to do good things in the world we will create community events and bring people together to celebrate Spencer’s memory while supporting these causes.

The “Spencer Squad” isn’t just a team — it’s a family. It’s everyone who believes in kindness, loyalty, and standing up for others. Whether you donate, volunteer, or simply share his story, you’re part of a legacy that continues to make a difference.

Because One heart can change the game. One choice can save a life.
And one incredible young man showed us all how.
